“You sure about this, darlin’?” Colt asks as Genna scurries out the door, swearing under her breath. Though he’s still smirking, he stands frozen in the doorway like he’s not sure of my intentions. “I’m not in the mood to be fucked with.”

My heart flips in my chest when it seems there may still be a chance to salvage this. “I want to give it a try.”

Colt’s smirk disappears. “This is not a taste test.”

“I’m not treating it like one,” I promise. “I just mean I have some serious issues to work through. And we’re gonna have to take it slow. That means no talk of becoming your old lady until I’m ready.”

“If you’re with me, you’re mine,” he clarifies. His eyes flicker to Ranger behind me. “What the three of us had was a good time, but I’m done sharin’.”

“Roger that, hoss,” Ranger answers. A swell of sadness rises in my chest when he removes his hands from my arms and steps back. What we had was more than a good time, but I can’t continue jerking Ranger around if I’m going to give Colt a chance. Ranger deserves to find someone who will make him happy.

“Yeah, okay,” I agree, nodding. I take a step closer to him. “I’m…sorry, Colt. You don’t know how much I regret walking away from you. It was an asshole move to leave you there the way I did. But I couldn’t deal with seeing you kissing Cheyenne. It’s gonna take time before I can trust again.”

“You’re gonna have to trust me,” he warns in a near growl. “Just like I’m gonna have to trust you won’t be hurtin’ me like that again, either.”

“I’ll try. It’s the best I can do.” Closing the distance between us, I slowly bring my arms around his waist, breathing him in and squeezing him tight. It’s the first hug I’ve initiated in years, and feels rather awkward. I’m rewarded by Colt’s free arm wrapping around me. Warm breaths puff against my head when he leans down to nuzzle his face against my neck. Instant warmth fills my chest as if confirming I’m doing the right thing. It feels right. Colt feels like home and everything good in my life. Letting myself become vulnerable in his arms may not be much, but to me it feels like a blind leap into the Grand Canyon.

“Let’s go for a ride,” he whispers, planting a kiss in the thick of my hair.

“In a minute,” I promise, releasing him. I cross back over to Ranger, wrapping my arms around him. “Thank you.”

“You two deserve each other,” he teases, though there’s a catch in his voice. “Go on, make up with the poor guy.”

I silently swear that I’m going to do whatever I can to help find him a good woman.

After kissing Ranger’s cheek, Colt takes my hand and dips his chin at Ranger with a look of gratitude as we leave the clubhouse. The day clings to a mere sliver of sunlight on the horizon, and the temperature has dropped at least ten degrees.
